Meet Danielle Cyr, founder of June Home Supply (formerly MÛR Lifestyle), an online boutique of quality home goods for simple living. What started off as a side project grew quickly, and operation swiftly moved from their home to a small studio in Winnipeg’s Exchange District.
What inspired you to start June Home Supply?
We honestly started JUNE out of a deep desire to pursue more meaningful work and a balanced lifestyle. At the time, Joël had spent the previous 10 years working grueling hours in the hospitality industry as a chef, while I left work to focus all my energy on raising our two young children. This eventually started to take its toll on both of us and we knew deep down that we needed change, so we paired my love for design and interiors with Joël’s entrepreneurial spirit to launch JUNE. We started slow and small, with operations happening out of our basement but quickly transitioned to a small studio in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, and soon more growth and transition presented itself with the opening of our storefront in the heart of our city’s downtown in 2018.
What values drive you in your day to day business?
Simplicity and beauty. It may sound overly simplistic and maybe naive, but in a world that can so often lean the other way towards busyness, even hostility, I believe adding even a small dose of beauty to it has inherent value and purpose. Whether through inspiring content or the curation of our products, our hope is to create a space that celebrates and encourages others to pursue a simple and beautiful life.
How did you decide on a visual direction for the brand?
If I’m being honest it has evolved as our brand has grown over the years. But ultimately I think our desire has always been to convey a visual experience that is calming, soothing and restorative.
There is so much noise out there and we want to be a resting place for the weary soul, and to encourage people to themselves create homes that feel like sanctuaries. So our bent is definitely towards a calming, neutral palette with an affinity for the simple and minimalist.
How do you see your personal lifestyle reflected in the brand you've built?
I have always been the happiest when pursuing a simple, quiet life. Let’s just say I’m not one to thrive in the hustle and bustle of busyness, but rather in the quiet unassuming moments spent at home. And JUNE is ultimately a celebration of home and the everyday, simple (even mundane) moments that we get to experience within them - whether that’s curling up on the sofa with a cozy wool blanket and a favourite book, quietly washing dishes contemplating life, or sharing a home cooked meal by candlelight with loved ones. Our product curation and brand content is always informed by the pursuit of this simple, unhurried kind of living.
How do you balance work and rest?
It can definitely be challenging at times to “turn off” work when you’re running your own company, but we’re constantly learning how to make rest a priority.
I’ve personally learned from experience (often the hard way!) that it’s really difficult to put out good work when you’re tired and depleted, so rest has to be a priority. The weekend is a lifeline for us — pressing pause on work, we try to do things that are life-giving. Like sharing a home cooked meal with friends, visiting family, going out for coffee, watching movies, sleeping in, and really just slowing down and taking in the beautiful life that we’ve been given.
It’s so easy to get tunnel vision when you’re running a business, and these simple moments really help us to reconnect with the world around us.
